Putting the art in SMarts, it is our pleasure to showcase a number of talented artists and offer interactive experiences such as:

Take One College

year three ITT artworkAs part of this year's festivalWe will be exhibiting artwork created by Year Two Primary ITT Art Students as part of their assessment. The theme was “Take One College” and the work is made from a range of mark-making materials, printmaking and collage. The Students were asked to focus on aspects of college life and the environment, and to demonstrate a progression of art skills

The SMarts workshop will use the exhibition as inspirations for a collaborating mark-making activity, encouraging people of all ages, to ‘make their mark’ and contribute to a mixed-media banner on the theme of, ‘This Environment’. Do take time to come and join in the fun!

Media Arts Digital Retrospective

sample digital imagesMedia Arts Students at St. Mary's University College produce a wide variety of digital photographs, as part of their assignments each year. We've often been impressed by their standard of work and their ability to capture striking visual images.

As well as Media students, many staff in the department are accomplished photographers. The SMarts Festival is the ideal event to demonstrate these considerable talents; so we're bringing both elements together in a single display of work.

Photography has really given me an outlet for creativity and most weekends are spent hunting for great subjects to shoot on walks and trips. My photos are mainly landscapes and macros and I've chosen a mix of these for the SMarts Festival."

grass picMy interest in photography stems from my dad. I can remember our bathroom at home being transformed into a darkroom, and his iconic black and white photos from the Festival of Britain in the 50’s.
During my career as a graphic artist, photography was a big part of my day to day work, especially in the darkroom!
I went on to work with one of Britain’s leading plant and garden photographers at Kew, I ran her photographic library and often went out on location photo shoots. Her amazing abstract images of plants have been an inspiration and influenced on my own photographic style. I am also the current photographer for St Mary’s.
I have put together a selection of photographs from my recent trip to Sicily, lots of close ups from the fruit and fish market. I am currently working on a series of ‘watercolour style’ of images of Cornwall.
